Bazooka Joe Comics Provide Opportunities to Read Between The Lines

Our Spring Reading Challenge centered on the works of Leo Lionni.
My class concentrated on the book, Frederick.

After reading Frederick, the children brainstormed what their talents were and created paragraphs about their special abilities.  They made individual mice performing the talents that they wrote about in their paragraphs.  I used cardboard to make Frederick and placed him on a milk jug that I spray painted gray.  I used more milk cartons to create the wall where the mice lived (one of my students came up with this idea).  I LOVE when they are so excited about what we do!

For a book assembly, they performed the play for the school.

How To Blow A Bubble
My twist on this was to use Bazooka Joe!  We had a great time reading the old comics and trying to figure out what they meant. It was a real lesson in background knowledge and inference with many of the comics.

The students made faces with construction paper, blew balloons up and placed those balloons where the mouths would have been located. Below was the result.
